West Steak and Seafood Restaurant
2011 Top 10 San Diego Steakhouse Restaurants
“Forget that it is part of the West Inn & Suites hotel complex; this standalone steakhouse serves up some of North County’s finest meat with chef Eugenio Martignago at the helm. Carnivores will enjoy the tender, wet-aged Prime cuts—especially the rarely found bone-in 16-ounce filet. Start with the smooth Maine lobster bisque, which has just the right hint of sweetness and generous lumps of meat. Warm roasted red and yellow beets nestle over mâche with piquant goat cheese, tomato and olive tapenade. Pan-roasted wild Alaskan halibut, flaky fresh and moist, finds a lovely companion in its butternut squash and parsnip risotto, with a roasted tomato and garlic tarte Tatin nearby. But the real showstopper is the meat—steaks cooked with a little butter and sea salt to let the flavor speak for itself. Colorado lamb and New Zealand Cervena venison chops demand attention, too. Truffled macaroni and cheese and German spätzle are standout sides, as is the creamed spinach (a reflection of a good steakhouse in our opinion). A decadent end: white chocolate crème brûlée with an almond tuile of fresh berries. Service is professional in the relaxing, modern setting.”

“I really prefer wet-aged beef and West does it right. My ribeye was cooked perfectly and tasted alot like the great steaks I have had from Ruths Chris in the past. Highly recommend the cowboy cut ribeye.”

“Enjoyed one of the best meals I have had in a long time. From the time my server, Cari, started my evening with a wine suggestion to meeting the Chef after my meal, all was simply outstanding. Anyone travel through this area should put this as a must.”

“West is a top-shelf steak house and is expensive, but is very competitive with the other steak houses in the area e.g. Mortons, Ruth’s Chris, and Donovans which are all similarly priced. The best kept secret is the Happy Hour that runs 7 days a week from 4:30-6:30. The drink prices are competitive and the food is fantastic and reasonable priced.”

“Lobster roll appetizer was fabulous. West Salad was amazing. Prime Filet perfectly cooked to order. Side dishes were all tasty. But, the bread pudding dessert was the cherry on top. Wine pairing suggestions for each course were perfect. I love the happy hour menu, but I am ordering the bread pudding off the dinner menu next time at happy hour.”

“My husband took me here for my birthday and it was AMAZING!……They head it was my birthday and brought me a white chocolate Creme Brulee (or however it’s spelled) which was delicious! The manager also came over to see how we were enjoying ourselves and brought me a $20 gift certificate! I would highly recommend this place! Way better than Ruth Chris’ Steakhouse!”

“We were staying at the hotel next to the restaurant and it happened to be my birthday, so we thought we’d try West. It was fabulous! The restaurant is beautiful inside with unique decoration and lighting. The waiter brought out some delicious yeasty rolls that were still hot from the oven. They were chewy and soft and some of the best rolls I have had at a restaurant. My husband and I skipped appetizers and salad because we weren’t hungry enough. We both ordered a steak combo that came with scallops and shrimp as well as two “petite” sides. I ordered gnocchi and sauteed baby vegetables and the sides were very generous. My husband had the gnocchi and spaetzle which was sauteed with olive oil, garlic and mushrooms. All of the sides were fabulous. The petite filets were melt-in-your-mouth delicious and perfectly cooked. The garlic sauce the shrimp was in was great too. My only complaint was that the scallops weren’t seared, which is how I prefer them to be prepared, but they were still well cooked. There was SO MUCH food. The service was a little slow but it was still good. We had at least two restaurant staff in addition to our waiter check on us and ask about our meal as well as wish me a happy birthday. I was also given a card by the staff for my birthday that included a $20 coupon for our next visit. My husband had a lemon custard tart for dessert and I had bread pudding, which they brought to me with a birthday candle. The bread pudding was very good. The tart was so, so. I would definitely go here again if I was local. What a pleasant birthday dinner, especially for a restaurant we went to mostly out of convenience. Also, it must be popular because it was packed on a Wednesday night at 6:30. ”

“With an unassuming name, in a shopping mall area, next to a gas station of all places, West shines bright. From the minute we entered and were greeted by an attractive and gracious hostess, to our personable (also attractive) server and on-the-spot steward, we knew we were in a special place. The 6 of us ate a broad sampling of the menu: salads, appetizers, fish, beef, sides. Our lone vegetarian was delighted with the quality and freshness of her meal. Desserts, always risky where there is a poor chef, proved that the kitchen has a master. From creme brule to the chocolate parfait – it was perfect!”

“Another great New Year’s Eve dinner at West. The staff is very friendly and attentive from the front door and on. The special with Maine lobster tail and filet was really delcious, as was the Lobster Bisque. Dane, our server, is the best! Great way to start the New Year. Got to try the Sunday special soon.”

“Best Lobster bisk ever and I’ve had it everywhere you can imagine. Steaks are superior to Donovan’s, Ruth Chris or Flemings.”

“Not a lot of options in the immediate area, which led to the choice of West based on the great reviews. Turned out to be a great restaurant, regardless of venue. Steaks easily on par with NYC steak houses, service was attentive, friendly, and helpful.
Place was full on a Tuesday night, with happy buzz throughout. Nice bar area with TV’s so you won’t miss the big game.
Like any good steakhouse, not cheap, but well worth it.”
